Elsie Beuglas Smith of Asheville, 88, died June 13 at the Laurels of Summit Ridge after an eight-year battle with breast cancer. She was born April 29, 1929 on the Holt family farm in Valley Bend, near Elkins, WVA, the only child of Hollis and Virgie Holt Palmer.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her first husband Jack Beuglas and second husband George Smith, and many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.

Elsie retired from Haw Creek School in 1996, and spent many years as a member of the Greater Reynolds Lions Club, where she received the Jack Stickney award and Melvin Jones fellowship, and served on the Board of Directors of the Marjorie McCune Center.

Survivors include daughter Lorraine Smith Angel of Advance, NC; son Michael Beuglas of Asheville; son Charles and wife Robin Smith of Candler, NC; son Steven and wife Kelly Smith of Martinez, GA.; grandchildren Austin and Allison Angel of Advance, Levi Smith of Candler, Courtney Farmer and Kyle Smith of Martinez, “honorary grandson” Liam Sexton of Belleview, WA; daughters of the heart Deborah Smith Griffith and Ruth Ann Smith Horwitz, and aunt Jennie Holt Adamovich of Flatrock, Michigan.

Her family would like to thank the staff at Cancer Care of WNC, Asheville Health Center in Swannanoa, Hospice Solace Center, and The Laurels of Summit Ridge for their compassion and care during Elsie’s illness; and the Rev. Allen Rash of Trinity Baptist Church and the Rev. Karen Doucette of Bethesda Methodist Church for their visits, friendship, and prayers.

A service of remembrance will be held Friday, July 7, 3:00 pm at the Marjorie McCune Center, 101 Lions Way, Black Mountain. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the McCune Center, 101 Lions Way, Black Mountain, NC 28711.
