Fred Erb

Fred Erb, 85, of Brevard, NC passed away peacefully on Monday, July 10, 2017 at Torres Home in Brevard, NC. Born on January 22, 1932 in Frankfurt, Germany, he was the son of the late Henry and Suzanne Erb. He received a diploma from Gymnasium Offenbach, Germany, and received his B.S. in Physics and Electrical Engineering from the University of South Carolina in Columbia, SC. In 1953, he immigrated to Toronto, Canada, and his future wife, Evelyn, immigrated from Manchester, England in 1955 also to Toronto, Canada . In 1956, they immigrated to the United States where they were married a year later and resided near Cleveland, OH for 16 years raising their children during their early years. Later he moved with his job at the Square D. Company to Columbia, SC. After retiring in 1997, he moved to Pisgah Forest, NC and then in 2015 on to Brevard, NC. He proudly served for 2 years in the U.S. Army, and retired after 36 years of service from Square D Company which became Schneider Electric in Columbia, SC. As a member of the Sierra Club and the Chinook Camping Club, he enjoyed traveling and camping throughout the United States and Canada and enjoying the great outdoors. He had an appreciation of music and enjoyed attending concerts and plays. Model railroading was another passion of Mr. Erb's. A Jack of all trades, barely begins to his vast talents and knowledge of mechanics as he could repair all most everything. He was a member of the Unitarian-Universalist Church. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by a step-sister, Marianne Erb. Surviving are his wife of 60 years, Evelyn Cowgill Erb; children, David Erb of Cary, NC, and Susan Erb of Columbia, SC, and his beloved shelties, Ramona and Cassie. A memorial service will be held at a later date at the UUTC in Brevard, NC. Memorials may be made in his honor to the UUTC, 24 Varsity Street, Brevard, NC 28712, or the Transylvania County Animal Shelter, 1124 Old Rosman Highway, Brevard, NC 28712, or Hospice of Transylvania Regional Hospital, 1266 Asheville Highway, Brevard, NC 28712. The family would like to acknowledge the staff at Torres Homes and the nurses and doctors at the Transylvania Regional Hospital for their outstanding care and compassion, and to the UUTC and the wonderful people on the caring committee for their support.
