Irma Jean Frohling

July 18, 1925 ~ May 17, 2017 (age 91) 91 Years Old

Irma Jean “Jean” Frohling passed away on May 17, 2017 at the Elizabeth House. Born in Oakland, California on July 18, 1925 to William and Agnes Grathwol (nee Dosch). She was raised in Stratford, Connecticut and went on to college in Boston where she majored in fashion illustration and married an MIT boy. In 1971, she started her own interior design firm, Jean Frohling Interiors, in West Chester, Pennsylvania, specializing in interior design for model homes and residential interiors. In 2004, she moved to Flat Rock, North Carolina to be near her sister and brother-in-law, Wilhelmina G. and Jack Norlin. In her later years, she loved to sit and watch the birds, squirrels and other critters, play and feed in the yard. She adored the cats she shared her space with, Rerun and Iko. At age 85 she received some local notoriety, with a TV interview, recalling telling the 911 operator she had a gun if the burglars she was reporting returned to her house. The 911 operator advised her to stow the gun before the Sheriff Deputies arrived. She was preceded in death by her brother William Hawley Grathwol. She is survived by her two children, Edward S Frohling Jr. (Barbara) and Laura Dosch Frohling, her sister Wilhelmina Norlin and Wilhelmina’s children Peggy Hamlin, Barbara Norlin, William Norlin, David Norlin and many nieces and nephews. The family has deep appreciation for the assistance given by Peggy Hamlin and DaVita Biltmore during Jean’s long treatment for kidney disease. A celebration of life will be held from 2-4 PM on Saturday, May 20, 2017 at her residence, 160 Covered Bridge Drive, Flat Rock, North Carolina. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to your charity of choice in Jean’s name.
