Jerry Allen Mitchell

Jerry Allen Mitchell of Asheville was born June 2, 1954 in San Angelo, Texas. His death due to cancer was March 9, 2017 with his family by his side. He was affectionately called "Butch", a name given to him by a nurse at the hospital where he was born. When Jerry was two and a half years of age, he was asked where he got his red hair and his reply was "God gave it to me". Jerry grew up in Akron, Ohio and was active in Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts of America. He graduated from Hower Vocational High School, Akron, Ohio. In his senior year he was given the schools Manhood award. He was a champion swimmer and earned a scholarship to Youngstown State University. He proudly joined the Navy where he served 5 years. The first four years he flew with reconnaissance Planes guarding our U.S. coast. He was then transferred to a "floating dock" based in the Mediterranean Sea. He later attended St. Petersburg College in Clearwater, Fl. Then he moved to Greenville, S.C. where he learned stain glass art. He was a Grateful Dead fan and attended many concerts. He moved to Asheville and opened Glass Opera Studio and light opera wind chimes and many other stain glass art works. He leaves behind his loving mother, Janet M. Mitchell, of Dunedin, Fl., daughter, Sueanna McDaniel, of New Port Richey, Fl., brother, James L. Mitchell, of New Port Richey, Fl., sister, Joanna R Snell (Terry), of Altamonte Springs, Fl., nephew, Jeremy D. Mitchell, of Longwood, Fl., grand nephews Joseph McRorie, Joyce McRorie Mitchell, and Jamison Mitchell, friends, Kerry and Heather Diaz of Arden, and many friends in Arden who are having a tattoo made in his honor. No services will be held at his time.
