Laura (Fonner) Moore

Laura Fonner Moore of Givens Estate Retirement Community, Asheville, NC passed away on November 18, 2017.  Laura was a native of Middlebourne, WV, and daughter of James T. and Susan C. Fonner.  She was a graduate of Tyler County High School and West Virginia University where she received a B.S. Degree in Home Economics in 1949.  Laura married her husband Richard the year following graduation from WVU and relished 67 years with him while living in WV, VA, and NC.  Laura began her career working in Wheeling, WV, for the WVU Extension Service 4-H Program. Later, she attended Radford College, Western Carolina University, and UNC-Asheville, while pursuing a K-3 Early Childhood Education Degree and Reading Certification.  Laura then taught for the Asheville City Schools at Claxton School.  She is a member of Kappa Kappa Iota, national teacher's sorority and in retirement, volunteered for the Buncombe County Literacy Program, for several years.

 

Laura was a member of Central United Methodist Church since 1968 and active in the United Methodist Women, the Covenant Sunday School Class and served on the Library Committee and other committees in the church.  She was also an active member of the Leaf and Petal Garden Club, Church Women United, and PEO-AC in Asheville, all organizations which she cherished.

 

Laura is survived by her husband Richard C. Moore. In addition to her husband Richard, she is survived by two sons; Stephen and wife Pamela and their children Tyler, Weston, and Jackson of Pensacola, FL; and Daniel and wife Joy of Greensboro, NC.; one sister-in-law, Betty Jane Fonner of Morganton, WV, the wife of brother Franklin; and numerous special nieces and nephews.  Preceding her in death were two brothers, Franklin Fonner, Fredrick (and wife Mary Ann) Fonner, and her loving sister Betty Fonner.

 

A “Celebration of Life” service will be held on November 25, 2017, at 2:00 P.M. at Givens Estates Chapel in Asheville with Dr. Rob Blackburn officiating.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Central United Methodist Church and Givens Estate Staff Appreciation Fund.
