Bat Cave, NC — Lee W. Finks, 80, died Saturday, June 20, 2015 in Rutherford County, NC, after several years of declining health.
Lee was born and raised in Roanoke, Virginia, the son of the late Alice Thomas Finks and Lee W. Finks, Jr. He is survived by his wife, Martha Harris of the home; his son, Wilson Finks of Chapel Hill; his daughter, Cat Finks of Asheville; and his son, Charles Finks of Portland, Oregon. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Elizabeth Wilson Finks.
After graduating from the Roanoke public schools, Lee obtained his undergraduate degree in 1956 from Hamden-Sydney College and served in the U.S. Army (Fifth Army). Lee then earned a Master of Library Science degree from Florida State University and married Laura Virginia Wilson, who became the mother of his four children, all born in Virginia. Lee worked as a Librarian at Emory University, at Virginia Military Institute, at the University of East Africa, at the University of Virginia, and at the Episcopal High School in Virginia. He obtained a PhD from Rutgers University and spent the remainder of his career as a Professor of Library Science, at Emory University, at the University of North Carolina, and at North Carolina Central University. He was dedicated to and beloved by his students.
Lee had a passion for sports, reading, hiking, and travel. He volunteered at Chapel of the Cross in Chapel Hill, at the Durham Public Library, and, starting in 2005, at Earthaven Ecovillage near Bat Cave.
Lee was known throughout his life as warm, caring, hard-working, and fun-loving. He was devoted to his children and considered being a father one of the greatest blessings of his life. Lee found the love of his life, Martha Harris, in 1981 and they were married in 1986. They were extremely grateful for their decades of happiness together. He will be missed by many and deeply mourned by family and friends.

On Sunday, August 16, 2015 at 3:00 pm a service will be held at the Old Jefferson High School in Roanoke,VA. For more information see link below:
