Richard J. Spellman, 76, of Brevard passed away peacefully on Wednesday, June 28, 2017 at the Memorial Campus of Mission Hospitals. Born on February 10, 1941 in Brooklyn, NY, he was a son of the late John Spellman and Anne Martin Spellman. He grew up in Brooklyn, but also had resided in Sound Beach, NY and Cutchogue, NY. He was a graduate of Weldon E. Howitt H.S. and Suffolk Community College. Mr. Spellman proudly served in the Army National Guard, and was employed by Brookhaven National Laboratory as Division Manager for 27 years before retiring. Of his several passions in life, reading, attending movies, and being involved in his community were among his favorites. At Deer Lake he was the president of the Board of Directors, was their chairman of the Maintenance Committee, and assisted with some of their computer programming. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife of almost 50 years, Patricia Spellman, and mother-in-law, Edna Young. Surviving are his children: Michael Spellman of Long Island, NY, Susan Carroll of Oakridge, TN, and Jill Charnews and her spouse, Steven, of Hooper, UT; sibling, Ronald Spellman and his spouse, Joyce, of Hampton Bays, NY; grandchildren: John Spellman of New Suffolk, NY, Justin Carroll of Nashville, TN, Shane Carroll and Kaitlyn Carroll both of Oakridge, TN, Kyler Charnews and Kortney Charnews both of Hooper, UT, and a lifelong friend, Don Furci of Port Richey, FL. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM on Sunday, July 2, 2017 at Sacred Heart Church in Brevard, NC with Father Shawn O'Neal. The family will receive friends at the Deer Lake Club House following the service.
