Asheville - Susan Weinerman passed away on April 17, 2018, following a long period of declining health. She was born in Newark, NJ on June 21, 1940. She was preceded in death by her mother, Ethel Katz Weinick, and her father, David Weinick, as well as her sister, Helene Silverman.
She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Lloyd, her daughter Lisa Horak, son-in-law Michael Horak of Asheville, and son Richard Weinerman, of Burnsville, MN. She leaves behind three beloved grandchildren, Molly Horak, Isabel Horak, and Brian Weinerman. She is survived by a brother-in-law, Ernest Weinerman, and several nieces and nephews and their spouses.
Susan graduated from Weequahic High School in Newark, NJ, and went on to obtain a Bachelor of Arts from Boston University and a Masters degree in library science from Towson State University.
She lived in Baltimore for 40 years and moved to Asheville in 2004 to be closer to family.
Susan was a school librarian in Baltimore City Schools for many years, and was a passionate lover of reading. In addition, she was an antiques dealer specializing in English porcelain and vintage handkerchiefs. She loved needlepointing and created many beautiful rugs and wall hangings. She was part of a bridge group with several dear friends. She loved traveling, especially to summer music festivals in Santa Fe, NM and Charleston, SC. She loved the Asheville Symphony, the Asheville Chamber Music Society, and opera. She was a devoted champion of the underdog, and volunteered whenever she could to help those less fortunate.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm on May 12 at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Asheville, 1 Edwin Place, Asheville. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Asheville Buncombe Community Christian Ministry.
