Edward Lester Gegan, Jr., age 62, of Candler, North Carolina, died August 12, 2019, at Mission Memorial Hospital.

Ed was born in Memphis, Tennessee, on November 15, 1956, to Ida Jean Allison Gegan and Dr. Edward Lester Gegan. He graduated from Livingston University with a history degree and honors, as well as pre-law and pre-med experience and knowledge. Ed worked in health care as the manager of a group home in Waynesville, North Carolina, as an assistant counselor at Jonathan Creek First Day for Drug and Alcohol Abuse, caring for terminally ill patients in an assisted care facility, and in Mission Hospital’s operating room. Ed also worked for High Hampton Golf Shop and for Cherokee Casino as the manager of valet parking. The vast number of awards, prizes and honors given to Ed reflected the dedication he brought to every field of work that he chose to do. Ed was also a member of the golf team and played high school football, was a member of Pi Kappa Phi, and of the Methodist Church. He lived many places in Tennessee and Alabama, and Montana, and finally Candler, North Carolina.

Ed was preceded in death by both of his parents; his sister, Emma Allison Gegan; his grandmother, Emma Allison; and grandfather, Dan Allison.

He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Gigi Day Gegan, of Candler; son John Edward Dermon of Auburn, Al., step-daughter Robin McDevitt and her husband Mark McDevitt of Asheville, NC, and stepson Shane Gann of Candler, NC; his step-grandchildren Crystal Stroupe and her spouse Josh of Candler, NC, Sergeant David Cruz and his spouse Chelsea Martin of Fort Benning, Georgia, and Kevin Martin and his spouse Brooke of Ohio; and eight great-grandchildren.
