Elmer Scott Fitzsimmons Arden - Elmer Scott Fitzsimmons, 94, died on Monday, April 10, 2017 at his apartment in Trinity View Retirement Center. Born on February 8, 1923 in Alabama, NY, he was the son of the late Charles Frederick Fitzsimmons and Dora Agnes Hitchcock. He was an alumnus of Alfred University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In between college and graduate school, Elmer served in the United States Navy as an instructor during World War II. Dr. Fitzsimmons taught at Iowa State University in Ames, IA. He also worked in industry as an engineer for Babcock & Wilcox (Alliance, OH); Cincinnati Milling; Fusite; and General Electric (Cincinnati, OH and Wilmington, NC). He was an active member of St. Matthew's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Wilmington for 35 years before moving to Arden and joining the Lutheran Church of the Nativity. Elmer served as a volunteer with Lower Cape Fear Hospice, a counselor in the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program, and treasurer at Trinity View. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Margaret Fitzsimmons; sister, Hazel Fitzsimmons, and brother, Robert Fitzsimmons. Surviving are: children, Dora Daniluk and husband, Tom, of Katy, TX, David Fitzsimmons of Asheville, Mark and wife, Dana, of Arden; grandchildren, Wade Daniluk and wife, Sarah of London, UK, Kate Barker and husband Dave, of Overland Park, KS, Kyle Fitzsimmons and Evan Fitzsimmons both of Arden; great-grandchildren, Wesley Barker, Colleen Barker and Audrey Daniluk; and sisters, Nellie Graziaplena, Lillian Martin and Freda Klotzbach. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM on Friday, April 21, 2017 at Trinity View Retirement Center in Arden, NC, with Rev. Stephen Ridenhour officiating. A reception will follow the service. Interment will happen earlier in the day, 10:00 AM, at the Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery.
