Evelyn May Johnson

Evelyn May Short Johnson, 91, of Hendersonville, North Carolina, died September 28, 2019, at Pineville Rehabilitation and Living Center in Pineville, NC.

Evelyn was born in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, on May 15, 1928, to Lilly May Ford Short and George A. Short. She attended Mt. Pleasant High School, and worked for Nancy Johnson Realty and for Kingsley Mortgage Company in North Miami. Formerly of North Miami and Saddlebag Lake Resort in Lake Wales, Florida, she was a 34 year long resident of Hendersonville.

Evelyn was preceded in death by her husband, Lester O. Johnson; son Charles G. Kellems; brother William G. Short; and granddaughter Beth Jarrell Edwards.

She is survived by her daughter, Sarah Kellems Jarrell (William) of Charlotte, NC; sister Donna Short Hados of Spring Hill, Florida; granddaughter Emily Jarrell Spake (Logan) of Hickory, NC; great-grandsons James Patrick Spake and Brian William Spake; sister-in-law Barbara Jackson Short of Sapphire, NC; nephew Lewis A. Short (Gayle) of Piedmont, SC; nieces Lori Short Porwoll (Paul) of Johns Island, SC, LuAnn Short of Apopka, FL, and Leette Short Clarke (Mark) of Acworth, Georgia; great-nephews Ryan Clarke (Michelle), Matt Porwoll (Sarah), Jason Clarke (Lauren), and Mike Porwoll; and many great-grand-nephews and nieces.

Evelyn’s family will hold a private service for her at Whitewater Cemetery in Saphhire, North Carolina, on October 19, 2019. Condolences may be made at AshevilleMortuaryServices.com.
