James 'Jim' Emory Hamer, 78, of Asheville passed away on December 14, 2018 at the Haywood House in Canton, NC. He was born on January 14, 1940 in Siler City, NC to John Windsore Roper Hamer, II and Louise Lacey Marley Snyder. In addition to his parents, Jim was preceded in death by his brother, John Windsore 'Ray' Hamer, III.
He earned his bachelor's degree in Journalism from UNC-Chapel Hill and worked for the Asheville Citizen-Times as a sports editor and writer for 31 years. Jim attended Erwin Hills Baptist Church and was an avid sports card collector and NASCAR enthusiast.
Jim is survived by his wife of 47 years, Julia Moon Hamer; son, Jamie Hamer (Lynn) of Whitesburg, TN; step-daughter, Rebecca Williams (David) of Ponca City, OK; grandson, Adam James Hamer of Greeneville, TN; and granddaughters, Emmalynn and Ellagrace Hamer of Whitesburg, TN.
