Julia Anne (King) Taylor died peacefully on Wednesday, October 4, 2017 at the Elizabeth House in Flat Rock, NC. She was 91. She was the daughter of Ted and Peggy King. She grew up in Jackson, MI along with five brothers and sisters. She graduated from Jackson Michigan High School in 1944 and attended Michigan State University for three years. She attended Michigan State as an engineering student at a time when women were not encouraged to enter this field. She met her future husband, Vincent B. Taylor, in Jackson, MI, during high school. Before finishing high school, Vince joined the Navy in 1943. On a trip back to his duty station in California, he stopped in Arizona where Julie was living at the time and asked her to marry him. They were married in Arizona in March 1949. Julie and Vince had five children. During Vince’s 30 year career in the Navy, they lived in Cuba, Newfoundland, Jacksonville, Green Cove Springs, Cape Canaveral (now Cape Kennedy) and Charleston twice. Julie and Vince were married almost 51 years. Julie’s primary occupation was a homemaker, although she would adamantly state being a Navy wife was just as big a job as being in the Navy itself. She also did bookkeeping at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Charleston, SC. After the two youngest kids were in high school, she went to work full-time for Charleston County in the Clerk of Court Office. Julie was an active member of Holy Trinity Church in Charleston, SC and St. Peter’s by the Sea Church in Charleston, SC and the Church of the Transfiguration in Bat Cave, NC. She was a long time member of The Order of the Daughters of the King. She volunteered for many years at Rural Mission on John’s Island, SC. She was also very active and helped start a Charleston Chapter of the National Kidney Foundation. Julie played the flute in the Michigan State marching band and continued to play the flute throughout most of her life, primarily with her church choir. She was an avid and accomplished seamstress and sewed many outfits for her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was always sewing something for somebody in the family. Before and after retiring, Julie and Vince spent a lot of time at their cabin in Bat Cave, NC and roaming around the mountains of western North Carolina. When they were in Bat Cave, it was an afternoon ritual with Julie to join the other ladies on the hill at Ms. Warren’s porch to discuss the day’s events and cure what ails the world. Julie was preceded in death by her husband, Vince, and her youngest daughter, Marty Taylor. Of her siblings, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Ted (Jr.), William and Fred King and sister, Nancy Hartsuff. She is survived by a brother, David A. King (Tessie) (of Bakersfield, CA), a brother-in-law, Ray Hartsuff (of Jackson, MI), a sister-in-law, Maryann King (of Lake Wales, FL), and many nephews and nieces. She is also survived by daughters, Jeanne Taylor (of Bat Cave, NC), Janet Gatch (Charles) (of Lobeco, SC), daughter Bethany Sue Latrace (of Charleston, SC) and son, Thomas Taylor (Vicky) (of Charleston, SC). She had eight grandchildren – Kourtnee, Cameron (LaRinda), David, Amy, Sandy, Kimberly (Brad), Holly (Sherwood) and Adam (Lisa). She also had fifteen great- grandchildren – Kyndall, Kori, Jaidyn, Kylaia, Austin, Gavin, Dylan, Hayle, Emilee, Chandell, Prophet, Caira, Lexi, LaRiah and Daisy. She could be referred to as Granmama, Grandma, G-ma, GG-ma or Grambo at various times. The family would like to thank the entire staff at the Elizabeth House for the compassion and tenderness shown to mom in her final days.

A memorial service is scheduled for Friday November 10, 2017 at Church of the Good Shepherd 1393 Miles Drive in Charleston, SC 29407 at 1:30 PM. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Elizabeth House, the American Cancer Society, or the Alzheimer’s Association.
