Marcus Aureolius Maattala, 77, passed away March 21, 2019 at the Laurels of Hendersonville in Hendersonville, North Carolina.
Marcus was born December 27, 1941 in McIntosh, Minnesota to Leo Augustus Maattala and Lillian Margaret Haugen Fronden. He was an 8 year resident of Pisgah Forest, NC. During his lifetime he also lived in Japan, California, Texas, Alaska and Hawaii.
Marcus graduated the University of Alaska, Anchorage with a Bachelors of Fine Arts. He proudly served in the United States Air Force. During both his military and civilian life he worked in the Mental Health field.
Marcus was a creative soul. He enjoyed pottery, sculpting, wood carving, and was a multi-media artist. He was a traveler, cook, nature lover, and historian. He particularly loved train travel and was a member of the Sons of Norway.
He is preceded in death by his father, Leo, and mother, Lillian.
He is survived by his wife of 15 years, Cheryl Ann Maattala nee Solheim; son Thomas Anthony Maattala of Anchorage, AK; step-daughters Dr. Shanon Sidell of Waikoloa, HI and Tiffany Kurstin Haynes of Hollywood, CA; half-brothers Jim Fronden(Sandra) of Duluth, MN, Jeff Fronden(Karen) of Duluth, MN, John Fronden of Duluth, MN, and Enson Maattala of Dilsworth, MN; step-grandsons Alex Wynne of Wasilla, AK and James Haynes of Hollywood, CA; step-granddaughter Natasha Haynes of Hollywood, CA; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.
A service is to be held April 4, 2019 at 2pm at his home. The VA Chaplain and Dr. Shanon Sidell will be presiding.
