Robert "Bob" Townsend Mayer, 85, of Asheville, NC passed away after a long, valiant battle with alzheimer's disease on Friday, September 22, 2017. He was born in Pittsburgh, PA, and the son of the late Dorothy D. and Walter S. Mayer. He will be greatly missed by his wife, Suzanne S. Mayer; daughter, Judy M. Gehman (Les); son, Ronald J. Mayer; former wife, Barbara D. Mayer; brother, Richard D.; niece, Amy M. Mitlitsky (Michael); step-children, P.G. Thiessen Jr. (Jen), Gretchen T. Berkman (Ben); four step-grandchildren; and his best friend and canine companion, Scooter. Bob, a mechanical and electrical engineer, began his career with the company his grandfather and great-uncle started, Mayer China, in Beaver Falls, PA. He would later work for Westinghouse Electric Corporation in Beaver, PA and Asheville, NC where he retired in 1993. He was an adventuresome and curious man who loved amateur radio, boating, working with his hands and traveling the world. He was active with the United States Power Squadron in both Beaver County, PA and Asheville, NC and shared his love of boating with others. He satisfied his curiosity by taking many classes at College for Seniors (OLLI) at UNC Asheville. Respecting Bob's wishes there will be no service. Burial will be in Beaver, PA. Contributions in his memory may be made to Memory Care support groups, CarePartners adult day program, Central United Methodist Church of Asheville or the charity of your choice.
