Carolyn Effler

January 8, 1945 ~ March 17, 2020 (age 75)

Frances “Carolyn” Prater Effler, age 75, of Old Fort, NC, passed away peacefully, on Tuesday, March 17, 2020, in Asheville at her daughters home, surrounded by her loving family.

Mrs. Effler was born on January 8, 1945, in Buncombe County, to the late Cecil Prater and Celia Justice Prater. She was a loving wife and mother and loved to cook. She also loved her dogs, Sam, a chihuahua and Little Boy, a wire-haired terrier. Most of all, she loved her family dearly and her children and grandchildren were the joy of her life.

Those left behind to cherish her memory are her son, Charles Heffner of Punta Gorda, FL; two daughters, Tina Keith of Old Fort and Teresa Griffin of Asheville; four brothers, Dale Prater of Swannanoa, Terry Prater of Burnsville, Darryl Dillingham of Leicester and Claude Dillingham of Weaverville; three grandsons, James (Meghan) Harris of Rutherfordton, Timothy (Jessica) Harris of Marion, and Brandon Heffner of Cowpens; a granddaughter, Tabitha Endsley of Waynesville; and six great-grandchildren.

An old and wind-scored ship sat in her custom dock unable to carry her merchandise to the other side any more. Plans were made to send her to the other country from which she had been borrowed. A few people lined the beach to take a last look. As she slowly left the dock-facing the waves of a mystical sea- eyes were straining to see the last speck. As she fell out of sight, someone said, “There she goes.”

Then somewhere beyond, the old ship with sunlight beaming on her bows- was coming near to the shore. All at once, hundreds of people sang, “There she comes.” Banners were flying, trumpets were blowing- there was singing and rejoicing- tears of joy- whispers of love. At last, she was home to stay.

A Memorial Service will be announced by the family at a later date.
