Daniel Labon Penland, age 80, passed peacefully on April 23, 2024 at his home in Candler.
He was a husband and widowed. His greatest work was anonymous, he served alcoholics as a spiritual advisor and mentor. Surely thousands of us appreciated his way with words and his country whit. He served in the Navy in Vietnam and was affected by Agent Orange. After his honorable discharge he settled for a time in Long Beach California and was an entrepreneur operating a large industrial junkyard, he also was a telephone cable splicer and was afforded travel through many states. Coming back to Candler later in life, to his root he worked as a self employed mechanic, logger, and was always quick to make a trade. He helped everyone he knew who needed it, even losing some fingers in the bargain.
Daniel was the son of Horace Penland and Eula Gant. He is survived by his siblings, Anne Cole, Gail Hager, Jean Bagby, and Charles Penland; and his children, Tonya, Daniel Jr., and Sandy. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Jim and Garry.
It was my honor to care for him these last 7 months. I will miss him, his courage, strength, and love for humanity; Chris Sawyer
