David P. Allen

         On January 10th, 2023 David P. Allen of Beckley, WV passed away after a long battle with Alzheimer’s and dementia. He was 71 years old. Born on October 20th, 1951, he was the son of the late Coe C Allen and Beulah Mae Allen. In addition to his parents, David was preceded in death by his brother James R. Allen. 
          David lived, worked, and retired in Beckley, WV until 2017, before moving to Moncove Lake, WV for a brief time. As his disease progressed he spent his last few years of life close to family in Asheville, NC, with his wife of 50 years, Valorie Michael Allen and sons Joshua and Christopher Allen. 
          David graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in 1970 and attended Greenbrier Military School in 1971 and Glenville State University in 1972. David was a highly regarded and talented athlete in several sports throughout his earlier years and eventually turned down an opportunity to play professsional baseball with the Baltimore Orioles to marry the love of his life any start a family. David was employed by Universal Coal Supply in Beckley for 44 years. An avid outdoorsman who loved hunting, fishing, archery, and being in nature, David was most comfortable when he was able to get out into the woods and be with wildlife. He coached sports with a passion, and put his all into teaching others not only the basics of the game, but also valuable life lessons of respect, hard work ethics, sportsmanship, honesty, and integrity to move through life beyond the game. He was a simple, caring, and kind man and was usually smiling, joking, and reminiscing about stories of his life experiences and the good times he had with his friends and family. 
          Those left to cherish his memory include his wife Valorie Michael Allen, his sons Joshua Allen and Christopher Allen and wife Erica Engel Allen of Asheville, NC. Two grandsons Nathan Allen and wife Riley Allen of Alice Springs, Australia and Andrew Allen of Los Angeles, CA. One granddaughter Rio Simone Allen of Asheville, one step-granddaughter Edie Francis Engel of Asheville, and one great grandson Parker Lee Allen. His sister Jeanne Allen Nagye, and her husband Elmer of Beckley, WV, sister-in-law, Kathy McCormick Allen, of Waynesville, NC,  and several nieces, and nephews.
