Edward Bashor Hina

Edward Bashor Hina, 87, of Morganton, NC, previously from Brevard, NC, died Sunday, October 29, 2023 surrounded by his family. Born in Frances, KY, he was the son of the late Joseph Weldon and Naomi Hina. He excelled in basketball at Young High in Knoxville and graduated from the University of Tennessee.

Ed was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Peggy Lee Jones Hina, and sisters Marian Hina Stuart and Janet Hina Clarke. He is survived by his daughters, Mary (Art) Dunn of Morganton, Anne Hina of Morganton, and JuLee (Chris) Comer of Laurel, MD; his son, David (Amy) Hina of Murphy, NC, and grandchildren Allison, Melissa, Michael Dunn, Kali, Mei Mei, Caleb Hina, Jon and Zoey Comer.

Ed and Peggy lived in Brevard, NC where Ed worked as a Professional Mechanical Engineer at Olin Corporation (Ecusta) for 35 years. It was Ed and Peggy’s love for the mountains that brought them to Brevard. Virtually every weekend they could be found hiking throughout Pisgah Forest and the Smoky Mountains. One of Ed’s favorite memories was the summer of 1954 when he worked at the lodge on top of Mt. LeConte.

In the evenings Ed could often be found working in his workshop designing and making furniture, hammered dulcimers, and toys for the grandchildren. For many years he was caregiver for his wife Peggy, selflessly and tirelessly meeting her many needs and persevering through difficulties.

A memorial service will be held at Faith Presbyterian Church, 605 Bost Rd. Morganton, NC on Saturday, November 4, 2023 at 3:00 PM with Mike Thompson and David Hina officiating.
