Frances Sutherland Kirk

Frances Sutherland Kirk passed away peacefully at home on May 3, 2023. She was 95. Her husband of 70 years, David Kirk, passed away seven weeks earlier.

Fran was born in Pennsylvania to Frank Sutherland and Frances Drew Sutherland. She grew up in Wenonah and Westfield, NJ, and received a BA in Psychology from the University of Delaware. 

In 1953 she married Dave, and the couple moved to North Carolina in 1959. Together they raised three children and became active members of the Brevard community. Fran was a member of Brevard-Davidson River Presbyterian Church for over 60 years, where she served several terms as Deacon, taught Sunday School, and sang in the choir.

Fran performed with the Brevard Little Theatre, served as a troop leader in the Girl Scouts, was a member of the AAUW, the Book and Plate Club, and various other organizations. She was also a passionate supporter of the Brevard Music Center and the Transylvania County Library. She enjoyed playing bridge, golfing, walking, and cross-country skiing. Together with Dave she was a member of a Scottish Square Dance Troupe, studied Russian and traveled extensively in the US, Great Britain, and Europe.

Fran considered her friends and neighbors to be extended family. She had the gift of making people feel welcome and comfortable, and always had a word of encouragement for others. 

She is survived by daughters Winnie Ziter (Alan) and Linda Kirk, and son Andy Kirk. Additional survivors include grandchildren Matt Bryant (Brianna) and James Bryant (Tiffany); great-grandchildren Colin, Raven, and Evie; and brother George Sutherland.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 23, 2023 at Brevard-Davidson River Presbyterian Church.
