As a devoted and faithful member of Swannanoa Church of God, Gary lived out his beliefs through service, compassion, and unwavering dedication to others.
Family was Gary’s greatest blessing. He held a special, extraordinary bond with his granddaughter Jordan, and he was a proud great-grandfather to Braxton Lee, whose presence filled his heart with joy. Gary now rejoices in Heaven with his beloved wife, Mary L. Patterson, his sister Sandra Lance, and his parents.

Gary is survived by his daughter Cati Harris and her husband Chuck; granddaughter Jordan Ballard and her fiancé Brayden Phillips; great-grandson Braxton Lee Burnett; sister Sherri Stansell and her husband B.J. Stansell; brother Jeff Patterson and his wife Vickie Patterson; niece Jessie Stansell; great-niece Kaitlyn Felder and her partner Nic; nephew Josh DeGhetto and his partner Sam; great-niece Jameece Metcalf and her husband Richard; along with many extended family members and dear friends who were touched by his love.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to Bo Creasman for his constant support, and to Robert and Cathy Haynie for their enduring friendship and care. A very special thank you is also offered to the compassionate team at CarePartners Hospice Solace Center, whose kindness and support during his final days meant so much. The family would also like to express deep appreciation to the Home Care Team, Ginger, and the many dedicated staff members at the Charles George VA Medical Center in Asheville, NC, for their exceptional care, support, and commitment to Gary throughout his journey.
A joint funeral service for Gary and his wife Mary Patterson will be held on Sunday, December 14, 2025, at Swannanoa Church of God. Visitation will be from 2:00 to 2:30 PM, followed by the service at 3:00 PM.
