Gary Joseph Spaugy, twenty-year resident of Hendersonville, North Carolina, died April 4, 2021, at the age of seventy.
Gary was born June 27, 1950, to Virginia Lou Prueter Spaugy and Willis Junior Spaugy in Shelby County, Ohio. He graduated from Russia High School (Russia, Ohio) with the Class of 1969, and after some college he joined the military. He served in the United States Army in Vietnam between 1971 and 1973 with the 101st Airborne Division and received a Purple Heart for his service. Gary enjoyed camping, canoeing and fishing in younger days back in Ohio. When he moved to North Carolina, he enjoyed riding in the mountains in his Jeep, hiking and exploring areas of Western North Carolina with his partner, Rachael Justice. He also enjoyed spending time with Rachael’s family, including her mother, Mary Louise Justice, and siblings Paul (Cathy) Justice, David (Diane) Justice, Mary J. Bass and Sarah Justice. Gary also enjoyed being a member of his local American Legion.
In addition to his parents, Gary was preceded in death by his parents; and by a sister, Nancy S. Laile, of St. Marys, Ohio.
He is survived by his daughter, Heather Ellis of Springfield, Ohio; siblings Mike Spaugy of De Graff, Ohio, Steven “Jo” Spaugy (Sherry) of Wapakoneta, Ohio, Kathy Swonguer (Greg) of Belle Fontaine, Ohio, Melody Kitchen (Chuck) of Belle Center, Ohio, and Betty Chiles of Springfield, Ohio; grandchildren Ella and Addyson, both of Springfield, Ohio; and, in addition to niece Sonia Mayhugh Baldras (Pete) of Mission, Texas, several nieces, nephews, as well as great-nieces and great-nephews.
Special thanks to Four Seasons Hospice Elizabeth House for the care that Gary received while he was a patient. Interment will be at Western North Carolina State Veterans Cemetery in Black Mountain, North Carolina.
