Gerry McGuire Obituary

Gerry McGuire passed away peacefully from congestive heart failure at Hospice Solace in Asheville, NC on December 30, 2020, at 83 years young. He was born in Taunton, Massachusetts on March 31, 1937. He was the son of Edna May Colwell and William McGuire. He was pre-deceased by his brother Bill McGuire.

Gerry completed four years in the US Navy, serving in Germany and North Africa as a communications specialist.  Upon discharge from the military, he secured a job with United Parcel Service in 1959, starting out as a truck driver and retiring in 1997 as Vice President of European and Soviet operations.

Gerry was a long-time member of the Cliffs at Walnut Cove, and was an avid golfer. For 28 years he was a supporter of the Wings Charities for handicapped children in Ireland, travelling there annually to participate in golf tournaments- and he enjoyed beating his competitive Irish friends! Gerry also had a special compassion for homeless and abused animals, becoming a long-time supporter of Asheville Humane Society.  He was a man of faith and loved the Lord Jesus.

Gerry is survived by his wife Elaine McGuire, son Scott McGuire and wife Sonya, son David McGuire and wife Cindy, daughter Kathy McGuire Stover and husband Michael, grandchildren Melissa Wessling, David Gerald McGuire, Patrick McGuire, Nichole Ault, Michael McGuire, Nathan Minor, and Brandon Childress- along with 12 great-grandchildren.

In lieu of a traditional gathering in memory of Gerry, family and friends will receive a “Celebration of Life” video and memorial card soon. His place of rest will be Riverside Cemetery in Asheville, NC. In lieu of flowers, any donations made to Asheville Humane Society in Gerry's name will be received with much appreciation ( AshevilleHumane.org ).
