Hal Cartwright Obituary

Hal Victor Cartwright died on September 30, 2019 at the age of 96.

He is the second son of the late Zack Cartwright, an author, and Carroll Churchill Cartwright, an accomplished artist. After one year of college, Hal worked as a welder in the shipyard at Bremerton. He joined the Merchant Marines during World War II, attending the Merchant Marine Academy, making twenty-six north Atlantic and Pacific crossings in convoy on a Matson ship converted for transport, and becoming a licensed third mate before mustering out. Hal later worked with Jones Construction on the US Air Base in Thule, Greenland, as concrete factory manager.

He met the late Martha Louise Whitmire, a twin daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Whitmire of Rosman, North Carolina, and married her in New York. Hal worked with Arthur on his farm while also building small lakes and developing land in Transylvania County.

In his 40s, Hal commuted daily from Rosman to Western Carolina University, graduating in 1966 and going on to the University of Maryland, receiving his PhD in Political Science in 1975. Following the awarding of his PhD, Dr. Cartwright taught at East Stroudsburg State University in Pennsylvania until his retirement.

Following his retirement, Hal and Martha returned to Transylvania County, continuing to develop land and building a lovely home above his Pine Shores Lake development, where he could write and look over the beautiful mountains he loved.
