Irwin Harold Grassgreen of Morganton, North Carolina, passed away Sunday, May 16, 2021, at the North Carolina State Veterans Home in Black Mountain, North Carolina. He was eighty-six years of age.
Irwin was born December 11, 1934, to the late Lillian Wagner Cohen and Sidney Grassgreen in Bronx, New York. He served in the United States Navy on the USS Greenwood during the Korean War. After serving he met the love of his life. They married and raised their family in Rockaway, New York. Irwin loved to play golf, baseball, and put together puzzles. He loved to watch tennis, baseball, hockey, and old black and white movies. He also coached little league baseball and hockey. He taught us the importance of family values. He loved his family above all else, except maybe food. Through his Jewish faith he came to know Jesus Christ as his lord and savior and is now home in his final resting place.
In addition to his parents, Irwin's brother, Errol Grassgreen, preceded him in death.
He is survived by Thelma Grassgreen, to whom he was married sixty-six years; children Linda Wikarek (Peter) of Old Fort, North Carolina, Errol Grassgreen of Morganton, North Carolina, Martin Grassgreen (Stacey) of Roundup, Montana, Leonard Grassgreen (Keri) of Royal Palm Beach, Florida, and Beatrice Zielinski (Rick) of Palm Coast, Florida; his long-time family friend friend, Judy Civitano of Maricopa, Arizona; grandchildren Peter Wikarek and Healther Kaderlik of Old Fort, North Carolina, Alexandra Zwiers (Peter), Natasha Wieringa (Peter), Alanna Grassgreen and Nikia Grassgreen of The Netherlands; Brooke Myers (Jordan) of Boyton Beach, Florida, Dawn Blake (Dennis) of Dacula, Georgia, Christine Rodriquez (Ernesto) of Neptune, New Jersey, and Sean Stang of Palm Coast, Florida; great-grandchildren Ocean and East Kaderlik of Old Fort, North Carolina, Zyra Zwiers and Roxan Grassgreen of The Netherlands, Hayden Myers of Boyton Beach, Florida, Brianna Delgado of Dacula, Georgia, and Louis and Antonio Rodriquez of Neptune, New Jersey; and by a great-great-grandchild, Londyn McKenzie of Dacula, Georgia.
