James Cutler Obituary

James Mackin Cutler passed away in Asheville, NC on September 16, 2018. He lived nearly all his life in Vermont. He was a seventh generation Vermonter having descended from Jonathan Cutler who settled in Montpelier, Vermont in 1781.

He was born in Montpelier, Vermont on November 16, 1924, the second child of Marcus Morton and Mary Agnes (Peterson) Cutler. He graduated from St. Michael’s High School in Montpelier in June 1942 and entered the US Army in May 1943.

While in the Army during World War II he served in Allied Forces Headquarters in the Mediterranean in offices of the United States Claims Service in Algiers, North Africa and later in Naples and Rome, Italy. He was discharged from the Army in January 1946.

In April 1947 he joined Service Co, 172nd Infantry Regiment, 43rd Infantry Division of the Vermont Army National Guard in Montpelier. In September 1950 his unit was ordered to active military duty and he served at Fort Pickett, VA and at Warner Kaserne, Munich, Germany. Released from active duty in May 1952 he returned to the National Guard and remained in the Vermont National Guard, primarily at Camp Johnson, Winooski, VT, where he was a full-time employee, until his retirement in November 1984 with a total of over 40 years of military service.

On April 12, 1956, in a military chapel at Fort Benjamin Harrison, Indiana, he married Kathryn Carol Pollack who was serving as an officer in the US Army. They became the parents of seven children. The family also served the Vermont Department of Social Services as foster parent caregivers for several children.

His principal hobby in retirement was researching genealogy. He also enjoyed traveling. He enjoyed walking, usually taking a long walk every day. He enjoyed family gatherings and watching the grandchildren grow up.

In April 2004 he and his wife moved to North Carolina. After Kay’s death in August 2010, Jim remained in North Carolina.

Jim leaves his children James R. (Kathleen Taylor) Cutler of Steubenville, OH, Thomas M. (Carin Roth) of Santa Rosa, CA, Carol (Cutler) White (Chris White) of Cary, NC, John J. (Silvia) of Girona, Spain, David A. (Karen Roderer) of Fuquay Varina, NC, Peter M. (Jacqueline Bohan) of Candler, NC, Timothy E. (Cynthia Galle) of South Burlington, VT, a foster daughter Tracy Lynn Forant Cutler of South Burlington, VT,  sixteen grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He is also survived by brothers and sisters, Marguerite Orr, Essex Jct, VT, Marcus Cutler and wife Charlotte, Cape Coral, FL, Florence Morse and husband Elliott, East Montpelier, VT. Jim was predeceased by his loving wife Kay in August 2010, his parents, his brothers Harold, Robert, Albert (Bebe) and Franklin (Johnny), his sister, Lorraine O’Brien, and an infant sister Cecilia Cutler.

There will be no visiting hours. A funeral service will be held graveside at the Vermont Veteran’s Cemetery in Randolph, Vermont on October 12, 2018 at 11:00 AM. There will be a luncheon/reception immediately after the funeral to be held at Our Lady of the Angels Catholic Church, Randolph, VT.

In lieu of flowers contributions in his memory may be made to Easter Seals, the Knights of Columbus Bishop Rice Council 2946, the Vermont Old Cemetery Association, the American Legion (Montpelier Post No. 3, Inc.,) or the Essex (VT) Community Historical Society.
