James Southerland Obituary

James David Southerland , 74, of Black Mountain, NC, passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 26, 2021.

Jim was born on April 29, 1947 in Fayetteville, NC to the late Hubert and Myrtice Southerland. He received his BFA from East Carolina University and MFA from Penn State University. He worked as a Professor of Art at Montreat College for 34 years. Jim was an artist, always striving to learn more and share his passion.

Jim is survived by his wife, Buni Southerland, son Michael Southerland (Denise), daughter Laurel Mabery (Sam), grandchildren Eleanor Southerland and Henry Southerland, his loving companion, his border collie YoYo, and numerous other extended family.

A special thank you goes out to his friends Brad, Kevin, Brian and Joe, along with the amazing team at CarePartners Solace Center and those that made his care there possible.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
