James Hudgens Jr. Obituary

James Calvin Hudgens, Jr., 78, passed away peacefully on June 20, 2025, surrounded by his loving family at the VA Valor Hospice. Born on June 8, 1947, to Calvin Hudgens, Sr. and Ella Laura Mills, James led a life defined by service, dedication, and deep love for his family and community.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Brothers Dwight Hudgens, Steve Hudgens and Sister Diane Hudgens.

A proud veteran, James served his country honorably in the United States Army during the Vietnam War and later during Operation Desert Shield/Storm. His military service continued with the Army National Guard, where he demonstrated leadership, resilience, and a steadfast commitment to his fellow soldiers.

Following his military career, James worked for many years at Evergreen Packaging in Canton, North Carolina, where he was known for his strong work ethic and camaraderie with his colleagues.

James had a passion for mentoring and guiding young people, which he brought to life through many years of coaching youth league baseball and football. He was also an active member of the board for the South Asheville Youth League. He also found joy and relaxation in listening to jazz music, a soundtrack to the quiet moments he cherished deeply.

James was a faithful member of Hill Street Baptist Church, where he sang in the choir and had previously served on the Trustee Ministry. He was also a member of the Prince Hall Masons, where he served faithfully alongside his brothers until his health began to decline.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Evelyn Hudgens, and a sister, Angela Nesbitt. James was a devoted father to his children: Keary Hudgens, wife Ameshia Hudgens, Jeffry Hudgens, Christopher Hudgens, Niko Hudgens, Chris Eggleston, wife Carole Eggleston, and Joey Eggleston, wife Andrea Eggleston. He also leaves behind a special friend, Lesia Bryson, whom he held a special place in his heart as a coworker and friend for decades. His legacy endures through his extended family, including grandchildren: Mikota Hudgens, Emory and Maverick Eggleston, Julian Smith and Io Eggleston, cousins, nieces, nephews, and many others who were blessed by his warmth, wisdom, and unwavering support.

James will be remembered for his lifelong service to his country and community, his courage, his love of family, and the steady presence he brought into the lives of all who knew him. His memory will be a source of strength and inspiration for generations to come.
