John Alvin Awtrey

John Alvin Awtrey, 69, passed away on November 14 in Asheville, NC. 

Son of the late Alvin Jackson Awtrey and Mollie Louise Barrett Awtrey, he was born on December 30, 1954, in DeKalb County, GA.  After graduating from high school, John attended the Atlanta Police Training Academy.  He retired with the Gwinnett County Police Department after a successful career in law enforcement.

John had a passion for old coins as well as bitcoins.  He was always working on a project, and you could usually find him tinkering with lawn mowers or fixing the many things his family always seemed to be breaking.  John had a huge heart and loved to help others anytime he could.  He cherished his family, and was well known in his communities in Winder, GA and Franklin, NC as a loving father and devoted husband. 

In addition to his parents, John was preceded to heaven by his beloved wife, Judy Awtrey, to whom he was married over 35 years.  He is survived by his children, Emily Worthy (Bobby Worthy) of Franklin, NC, Stacie Ralston (John Ralston) of Gainesville, GA, and David Roberts of Franklin, NC; siblings Matthew Awtrey and Molly Awtrey of GA, Mary Awtrey of NC, and Jack Frazier Awtrey of Bremen, GA, as well as lots of grandchildren whom he loved and adored.

John was a deeply loved father, uncle, cousin, brother, colleague, and friend.  His passing was sudden and unexpected but quick, just like he always hoped it would be.  While we lost our beloved dad, many have lost a friend and loved one in him.  He has been a rock to many, a quick-witted master at dry humor to others, and a glorious pain in the neck to those who found themselves on the wrong side of the law.
