John Jurek, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on January 15, 2025, at 10 p.m., surrounded by the love of his family. He was 80 years old.
Born and raised in Hempstead, New York, on June 28, 1944, John spent his early years cultivating a sharp wit and a wicked sense of humor that brought joy and laughter to all who knew him. A dedicated athlete in high school and college, John played football and wrestled, excelling in both sports. He attended Adelphi University, NY + North Dakota University on wrestling scholarships, where his strength and toughness set him apart—qualities he always took great pride in. In 1980, he moved to Virginia, where he built a successful career and a loving home. Six years ago, John relocated to Asheville, NC, to live with his daughter Kim and grandson Alexander, who brought him immense joy and comfort in his later years.
Twice widowed, John was devoted to his beloved wives, Joan Dorothy Jurek and Sylvia Easton Jurek. Their memories remained a profound source of love and inspiration in his life, shaping his remarkable empathy and compassion.
As an accomplished optical engineer, John contributed his talents to prestigious companies such as Leica and Olympus microscope divisions. He left an indelible mark on his field and inspired colleagues with his expertise.
John’s passions extended far beyond his professional accomplishments. A lifelong lover of antiques, he had a particular fondness for Tiffany glass, marveling at its vibrant colors and exquisite artistry. He also had an adventurous spirit and a deep love of travel, with a special affection for Italy, where he delighted in its rich history, breathtaking landscapes, and culinary treasures.
Known as the person who could fix anything, John approached challenges with patience and a steady hand, always eager to lend his expertise to family and friends. His razor-sharp intellect and endless curiosity also made him the reigning champion of Trivial Pursuit. His family fondly remembers his uncanny ability to answer even the most obscure questions, often leaving everyone else in awe—and occasionally a little frustrated.
At his core, John was a man of immense generosity and warmth, paired with an observant + perceptive sense of humor that could light up any room. His quick wit and mischievous one-liners were legendary among family and friends, leaving a legacy of laughter as much as love. His daughters and grandson will remember the loving concern and care he offered in abundance.
John is survived by his daughters, Nancy Jurek and Kim Shriver, and his beloved grandson, Alexander Shriver, who will carry his legacy of love, humor, and resourcefulness forward.
John’s life was a true reflection of his values: generosity, passion, and devotion. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
