Johnny Powell Obituary

Johnny Stewart Powell, 86, of Rosman, NC, passed away peacefully in his home June 7, 2023. He was surrounded by his closest family and friends. He was born at his family home on March 7, 1937, to the late Fields L. and Hattie Whitmire Powell. He was the fourth born to a family that would grow to a total of 11 children (10 brothers and 1 sister). He was preceded in death by his wife, Doris Sitton McCall Powell, step-son, Larry McCall, and his brothers, Walter, Billy Joe, Keith, Donald, Jerry and Pick.

In 1962 he went to work for the US Forest Service where he would eventually retire after 35 years of service. He loved his job and would share stories often of traveling the country and fighting wildfires out West. Known by many as “JP,” Johnny loved growing a garden, working with his tractor, camping, hunting, and fishing. His greatest love however was his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren who knew him as “Papaw.” He never knew a stranger and was quick to lend a hand to anyone in need. If you knew Stewart, he was truly one of a kind and will be cherished in the hearts of his family and friends forever.

Johnny is survived by his daughter, Cindy Powell Thomas and her husband, Larry Thomas; sister, Avarie Gillespie, and brothers, Harry Powell, Gerald Powell and Jimmy Powell; step-daughter, Barbara Aiken, and step-sons, Ray McCall and Joe McCall; grandson, Justin Powell and his wife, Alexis Powell, and granddaughter, Kendra Thomas; great-grandchildren, Lexi Powell and Amden “Gator” Powell; as well as dozens more grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.
