Joseph Johnny Payne

Joseph Johnny Payne, 84, of Asheville, NC passed away on June 10, 2025 at the VA Hospital, in the Valor Hospice Unit in Asheville, NC. Born in Marshall, NC on January 16, 1941 to the late Hillard Payne and Polly Roberts Payne. In addition to his parents, Joseph was preceded in death by his brothers, Bailey Payne, Bruce Payne, and Charles Payne.

Joseph proudly served in the U.S. Army as a member of the 82nd Airborne Division. After completing his military service, he built a career in produce sales and security.

Left to cherish his memory is his brother, Jimmy Payne (Becky) of Asheville, NC; sister-in-law, Robbie Jean Payne of Weaverville, NC; nieces, Shree Beverly (Steve), Chrissy Stollmayer (Werner), Vickie Sarti (Dennis), Gwen Meadows (Jonathan); nephews, Phillip Payne, Rick Payne (Teresa), Jeff Payne (Starla); dear friend, Shirley Boles; god-daughter, Tonya Kay Green; god-granddaughter, Karissa Green Conner; god-grandson, Robert Levi Green; and four god-great grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held in the chapel of Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery on June 26, 2025 at 10AM. An interment will follow. Steve McClellan will be officiating.

In lieu of flowers, the family would like donations to be made to St. Jude’s Childrens Research Hospital or to Shriners Children Hospital.
