Judith B. Potter, 83, passed away peacefully with her daughters by her side on March 17, 2023, at Mission Hospital in Asheville, NC. Judy was born on November 16, 1939, in Chicago, IL, to Estelle Elizabeth Newcomb Bodkin and Harold Thomas Bodkin. A memorial service will be held at Brevard-Davidson River Presbyterian Church in Brevard, NC, at 3:00 pm on April 8, 2023. Judy was an avid reader, baker, quilter and crafter, history buff, music lover, animal advocate, and lifelong learner. A graduate of Albion College (BA) and Eastern Michigan University (MA), she taught English and history for many years, from sixth grade to college undergraduate courses. Judy had a heart for service, social justice, and helping marginalized members of her community. Her volunteer work included Literacy Volunteers, singing in the church choir, volunteering at the Brevard visitor center, and tutoring at El Centro in Brevard. She was a member of both the Mayflower Society and Daughters of the American Revolution and held leadership roles in the Waightstill Avery chapter of the DAR. Friends and family noted Judy’s gracious nature, quiet determination, strong faith, and generosity. She is preceded in death by the love of her life, her husband, James Potter, her parents, and her sisters Elizabeth and Joan. Judy is survived by her daughters, Mary Brackett and Joanna Amato, sons-in-law Carl Brackett and Christopher Amato, grandchildren Megan Brackett, Grace Brackett, and Evan Amato, and great-grandson Milo Romano.
