Larry Brethorst

     Larry Brethorst, 80, formerly of East Peoria IL, passed away Tuesday, May 18,
2021 at Mission Hospital in Asheville, NC.
     Larry was born March 22, 1941 in Bloomington, IL to Siept and Marianna Brethorst. He married
Patricia (Mahon) Brethorst in 1963 who passed away in 1994. He married Beth (Hansen)
Brethorst in 2003.
     Larry earned his Bachelor of Science Degree from Eastern Illinois University where he also
played football. He received his Master’s Degree at Illinois Wesleyan University. He taught in
the science department at East Peoria High School for more than 30 years as well as coached
wrestling for two decades. Larry was an avid sailor on the Illinois River at the Illinois Valley
Yacht & Canoe Club and raced in many regattas from the Chicago Yacht Club including the
race from Chicago to Mackinac Island for six years. After moving to South Carolina, he and Beth
spent many days on the golf course.
     He is survived by his wife, Beth, of Travelers Rest, SC; brother, Gary (Margie) Brethorst, of
Hendersonville, TN; sister, Joyce Rhodes, of Decatur, IL; son, Rick (Rene) Brethorst, of
Springfield, IL; daughter, Susan Callanan, of Mason City, IA; and grandchildren Wolf, Eddie
and Chloe. In addition to his first wife, he was preceded in death by his parents.
     The family will gather to celebrate his life at a future date in South Carolina.
