Larry Holcombe Obituary

Larry Dean Holcombe, 75, of Asheville, North Carolina, passed away on September 4, 2025, after a long battle with illness.

Larry was born in Asheville on November 12, 1949, to Gertrude and Thomas Lee Holcombe. He proudly served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War and was a member of the Army Boxing Team. After his service, he worked in many fields—from building houses with his father, to nightclub security, to managing multiple rental properties, and later as the founder and owner of Alexander and Lee Publishing Company for thirty years. A hardworking man, Larry often did the handy work on his properties himself well into his seventies.

In 2022, Larry received a diagnosis of pancreatic cancer and was given one year to live. With determination and faith, he surpassed all odds, living nearly three more years. He read the Bible and inspirational literature daily to keep a positive mindset, underwent chemotherapy, and even participated in clinical trials at the NIH in Bethesda, Maryland. This gift of time allowed him to deepen his relationship with his youngest granddaughter, Marilyn, and to share more life with those he loved.

Larry is survived by his beloved wife, Gretchen; his three sons, Charlie, Jordan, and Sawyer; and his three grandchildren, Aviana, Damien, and Marilyn. He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings Emma Jean, Clarence, and Thomas Lee (TL).

Larry lived fully and joyfully. He played many sports throughout his life—football in high school, boxing in the Army, and later tennis and golf. Even during chemotherapy and shoulder injuries, he stayed active, often working out with his son Jordan. He was a lover of music, especially classic rock, jazz, and funk, with Led Zeppelin among his favorite bands. He also played drums in several bands over the years.

Above all, Larry was a kind and loving man. He never missed an opportunity to tell his family he loved them, and he was known for giving big hugs. His sense of humor was ever-present. Larry will be remembered for his resilience, warmth, laughter, and the love he poured into his family.

A memorial service will be held at The Western North Carolina State Veterans Cemetery on September 19th, 2025, at 2:00pm. Everyone is also invited to gather afterwards at CreekSide Taphouse in East Asheville at 3:30pm.
