Lillie Maereen Score, affectionately known as “Mae”, age 87, passed away on September 2nd, 2025 in Asheville, NC. She was born on June 3rd, 1938 to the late John Crockett Whitt and Lillian Gray Whitt. Mae was the eldest of four daughters and was raised in a loving home. She was a devoted daughter, wife, mother, grandmother and cherished friend. A gracious Southern lady, she had a gift for making everyone feel loved, accepted, and valued. Mae, like the lily of the valley was “a sweet-smelling fragrance” to God and His people generously sharing her time, talents, and resources with all. A woman of deep faith, she carried both wisdom and strength of character, enduring many hardships and losses with grace and resilience.
Mae was a graduate of Concord College in Athens, West Virginia and received her Associates Degree in Business. After graduating from college, she left her hometown of Tazewell, VA, and moved to Washington, DC, where she served as a secretary to an Admiral at the Pentagon. She later worked as an Administrative Assistant for a Real Estate Agency and then later serving in the commercial banking industry. Throughout her career, Mae was admired for her strong work ethic, professionalism, and dedication. She had a gift for making friends wherever she worked, blessing many with her love, kindness, and genuine care for others.
After graduating from college, Mae moved to Washington, D.C., where she met her first love, Richard Scott. They were married for 17 years and were blessed with three daughters. Following Richard’s passing, Mae later found love again with Robert “Bob” Score, who brought three more children into the family. Mae and Bob shared 37 wonderful years together, building a life rich in faith, ministry, community service, and joy. They poured themselves into theatre work, Habitat for Humanity, and service along the Blue Ridge Parkway. They also loved to dance—especially ballroom—and were known for their hospitality, always welcoming others into their home with laughter, love, and warmth.
Beyond her work and ministry, Mae’s greatest joy was her family. She cherished her role as a mother and grandmother, and in retirement she devoted her summers to creating special memories with her grandchildren—traveling to zoos, theme parks, and the beach, and lovingly teaching them how to read. Mae delighted in simple pleasures like water aerobics, square dancing, hiking, knitting, baking, and spending time with her loved ones. Her love, kindness, and generosity touched everyone she met, leaving a legacy of warmth and devotion that will never be forgotten.
Mae is preceded in death by her first husband, Richard Scott, and her second husband, Robert Score. She is also preceded in death by her sister, Linda Whitt Fox, as well as her son-in-law’s, James Baker and Mark Scognamillo, and her step-daughter, Jennifer Score. She is survived by her children: Leslie Blue, of Roanoke, VA, Teresa Scognamillo, of Arden, NC, and Melissa Baker, of Arden, NC. She is also survived by her siblings: Barbara Whitt Gilbert, of Tazewell, VA and Jeannie Whitt Wolfe, of Candler, NC; and her grandchildren: Whitney Penland, of Roanoke, VA, Tyler Harrell, of Asheville, NC, Anjolie Scognamillo, of Portland, OR, Scott Baker, of Wimberly, TX, and Natalie Ballard, of Blue Jacket, OK and great grandson, Derrick Harrell, of Asheville, NC.
Our comfort in the loss of Mae is found in the promises of Scripture, especially I Thessalonians 4:13–18 and I Corinthians 15:51–58. We hold fast to the hope that when Christ returns, those who have fallen asleep in Him will rise, and those still living will be changed, to be with the Lord forever. This hope sustains us, reminding us to remain faithful until that day. Mae’s absence leaves a deep ache in our hearts, but we find peace in knowing we will be together again, reunited in Christ for all eternity.
A private service will be held for the family at a later date.
