Mary ''Betty'' McCall Obituary

Mary “Betty” McCall Owen

Betty Owen of Brevard peacefully passed at home February, 17th 2024, at the age of 100, surrounded by loved ones.  She was a lifelong resident of Transylvania county, born October 21, 1923 at the Duckworth mansion in Brevard. She only weighed 2.5 pounds at birth, and because of her size, she had to be placed in a shoe box with a hot water bottle.  She was preceded in death by her parents Frederick Marvin McCall Sr. Clerk of Court for Transylvania county for 17 years, mother Ruby Duckworth McCall of Brevard and her two brothers Fredrick Marvin McCall Jr. of Houston, Mississippi (wife Irene), and adopted brother Jim Curry of Florida (wife Anne).

Betty met her husband who also preceded her in death, Marvin Owen of Brevard, after he returned from serving in the army during WWII. They married July 26th, 1946 and were married just shy of 50 years. She was a loving mother to four boys and two girls. She leaves behind son Ronnie Owen (wife Betty) of Brevard who gave her grandsons Jonathan and Steven Owen, daughter Wanda Burnette (husband Bill) of Mills River who is mother to Sabrina Morgan and Sharon Hamilton, son John Owen (wife Sharon) of Appling, GA who is father to John Alan Owen, son Mike Owen (wife Phyllis) of Pisgah Forest, father of Tammy McCall and Timothy Owen, daughter Peggy Wahab (husband Abdul) of Cedar Mountain who is mother to Brook Boone and Charles Whitmire, and son Robert Owen of Miami, FL. She was granny to multiple great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Betty loved playing bingo with her many friends at Silvermont and at Davidson River Lions Club. The family gives special thanks to David and Martha Butler and friends for years of birthday celebrations given to her at the club. The family also gives special thanks to her grandson John Alan Owen for many dedicated years of taking care of his granny up until her passing. The family also appreciates all the hospice nurses and staff that cared for her during this recent transition. A special thanks also goes to the Zajac family for organizing her 100th birthday celebration.

She began her career at Ecusta in 1941 and retired from Gladfelter at age 70. Never having a license to drive, Betty walked from Maple Street to Duckworth Avenue after retirement to volunteer at the Sharing House for several years. She was a speed reader who enjoyed inspirational novels, traveling to Gatlinburg, TN, Isle of Palms, SC, and cruising the Caribbean. She never knew a stranger.  She attended First Baptist as a child and later rededicated her life to Jesus through baptism at Carr’s Hill Baptist Church in 1993. Her bubbly yet feisty personality will be dearly missed.  She is now with her husband, mother, and father who she missed every day. Now she is laughing and telling the stories of her long life to her family in heaven.  She loved life and lived it to the fullest!

A celebration of life will be held at the First Baptist Church of Brevard on Saturday, February 24th.  Visitation will begin at 2 PM, with services to immediately follow.  In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Sharing House of Brevard through their website at
