Matthew Thomas Spera

Matthew Thomas Spera, age 87, of Asheville, NC passed away on December 12, 2024 in Black Mountain, NC.  Matthew was born on January 19, 1937 in Medford, MA.  Matthew previously resided in Middleboro, MA.  He was a 1954 graduate of Medford High School.  Matthew proudly served in the US air force throughout his life and also worked for Boston Mutual and New York Life.

Matthew is preceded in death by his mother, Mary Spera, father, Matthew Spera, and two sons, Scott Spera and Matthew Spera.  Matthew is survived by his loving wife of 41 years, Judy Spera, and his daughters, Suzanne Spera, of Foxboro, MA, and Catherine Reid, of Boston, MA.  He is also survived by his sister, Joyce Calese, of Melbourne, FL, his grandson, James Spera, of Asheville, NC, and many nieces and nephews.

Matthew enjoyed watching football and baseball, and participated as a pitcher for many years, well into his 70’s.  He took pleasure in many walks at the Biltmore Estate.  He had a true love for dogs and so much enjoyed when they visited the North Carolina State Veterans Home in Black Mountain.

A private family interment will take place at the Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, a tribute donation may be made to Beloved Asheville to help an area he enjoyed so much to rebuild (www.belovedasheville.com or www.neads.org).
