Melissa Sue Stumbaugh, age thirty, passed January 17, 2021, at her home in Mills River, North Carolina.
Melissa was born to Debra Sue Johnson Sanstedt and Bruce Allen Stumbaugh in a ford thunderbird in Pinellas County, Florida, on June 10, 1990. She earned her bachelor’s degree from Appalachian State University, and worked as a social worker with Universal Health Services in Asheville, North Carolina.
Melissa enjoyed fire spinning, hoops and silks. She valued everything spiritual, and pursued her calling to help and build people up. She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends and she was loved by many people.
It is hard to encapsulate the great life led by Melissa in words. Her compassion and contribution to this world reached the deepest valley and the tallest ridge of the Appalachian mountains. The mountains she grew to love and call home.
Melissa never hesitated to lend a helping hand or ear to anyone in need. She was a selfless and dedicated friend whose loyalty was as promised as her humor.
Melissa was a member of Peace, Love and Fire Troupe and spent her time performing at festivals and events in Asheville, NC and across the east coast. She was a disciplined fire safety advisor and teacher to those inspired by her flow.
Melissa was preceded in death by her step-father, David Sanstedt; two grandparents, Mary Rose and Buck Johnson and her beloved dog Xander. Melissa is survived by her mother Debra Sue Johnson, the love of her life Justin Hicks, her cat Gitzi and many friends who adored her.
