Peggy Hina Obituary

Peggy Lee Jones Hina loved life and her Lord. She was a respected and beloved wife, mother, grandmother and friend. She passed from this earth December 3, 2020, at age 84.

Peggy Lee was born December 4, 1935 in Fleming, KY to William Rex Jones and Mabel Galford Jones. The family moved to Knoxville, TN in 1941 where she graduated as salutatorian of her class in 1954 from Young High School.

Peggy Lee was active at Church Street United Methodist Church of Knoxville, committing her life to Christ at the age of 14. Pursuing a career in Christian Education she attended Emory and Henry College in 1954-55 then graduated from the University of Tennessee in 1957 with a BA in English. She received her Masters in Christian Education from Candler School of Theology, Emory University, in 1958. She was Director of Youth at Decatur First Methodist Church in Decatur, GA in 1958-59.

Peggy Lee and her devoted husband Edward B. Hina married in 1959 and moved to Brevard, NC three years later where Ed worked at Ecusta Paper Company. Peggy worked as Christian Educator at First United Methodist Church of Brevard while raising their four children. During this time, Peggy was also the first female elected to the Board of Education of Transylvania County where she served for four years. She then worked as an Elementary School Reading Consultant for 12 years after receiving her Masters degree in Elementary Education from WCU. She completed her working career as a Christian Education Consultant for the Asheville District of the Methodist Church. After retirement she organized and directed the FUMC Elective Sunday School Class, continuing as director for 20 years.

Peggy and Ed loved hiking and camping throughout the Pisgah National Forest and Smoky Mountains with their children and friends. They travelled abroad to Switzerland, China, Australia and many other places. Peggy was an avid lover of Classical Music, enjoying the Brevard Music Center in the summers.

Peggy's inexhaustible energy and perseverance, her welcoming smile and genuine ability to make people feel special, and her love for God and her family are only a few of the reasons she was well loved and will be greatly missed. She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Edward Bashor Hina; her daughters, Mary Dunn (Art) of Morganton, NC, Anne Hina of Savannah, GA, and JuLee Comer (Chris) of Laurel, MD; son David Hina (Amy) of Murphy, NC, and grandchildren Allison, Melissa, Michael Dunn, Kali, Mei Mei, Caleb Hina, and Jon and Zoey Comer.
