Richard Jones Obituary

Richard Stanley Jones, beloved father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on April 15, 2024 at the age of 77.

Richard was born on March 16, 1947, to Charles Woodrow Jones and Sara Sadler Jones in Corpus Christi, TX. Early on he developed a passion for music and learning that stayed constant throughout his life. Richard was an Eagle Scout and earned the God and Country award. After graduating from W.B. Ray High School, he matriculated to the University of Chicago from which he graduated in 1968. Later in life, he received his master’s degree from the Perkins School of Theology at Southern Methodist University. Richard’s commitment to learning, particularly about faith and Christianity, was evident his entire life. He often said that he started reading at 6, and from then on, read everything he could get his hands on.

Richard had an eclectic career, working in banking, as a Methodist minister, as a social worker, and at a blood bank. While he never landed on one profession, his commitment to humanity and helping others was a common thread in most of the positions he held. After time in Chicago and Salt Lake City, he lived most of his life in Texas, including in Corpus Christi, Amarillo, El Paso, and Dallas, where he lived for over 25 years. Richard spent his later years close to his son’s family in Asheville, NC.

Though he played the piano, Richard’s favorite instrument was the human voice. He sang in church choirs, synagogues, and the Plano Civic Chorus. He took voice lessons for many years and volunteered on the board of Voces Intimae to help bring art song to the Dallas area.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his son, Joseph D. Jones, daughterin-law, Lisa M. Jones, grandson, Richard Owen Jones, and granddaughter, Audrey Neel Jones, of Asheville, NC. Additionally, Richard is survived by his brother Lawrence Jones and sister-in-law Amy Jones of Mason, OH, along with their sons Christopher Jones of Manhattan, KS, Jason Jones of Mason, OH, and Roger Jones, of College Station, TX. He will also be remembered fondly by his cousins and extended family.

A memorial service to celebrate Richard's life will be scheduled at a later date due to family circumstances. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Voces Intimae in Dallas, Texas.
