Stephen Campbell Obituary

Stephen Dwayne Campbell (1961-2024), “Potsy” to his great many friends, was born Stephen Dwayne Raspberry in Raleigh N.C. He was an all-around wonderful, giving individual who served as a health care provider for nearly four decades. He began his career in 1977 as a volunteer firefighter and EMT with the Fairview Fire Department and subsequently became a paramedic. After serving in Asheville N.C. for many years, he returned to school and earned a Bachelor of Science in Medical Administration and became director of the cardiology lab at Hilton Head Hospital, where he worked for a number of years. He also served as a paramedic for movie production companies and worked on such films as “The Last of the Mohicans.” He eventually returned to his community roots in Fairview and finished his career as an expert caregiver at Parkridge Hospital.

Stephen had a big and warm personality—a heart as “wide as the sky”—and was adored by his patients. In his free time, he loved nothing more than to be with his family and friends. Along with loving to fish, camp, cook out, and spend time at the beach, Stephen loved music—anything from Classic Rock to Country, and whatever he fancied on the radio. You knew he liked a certain song because of the frequency he played it.

His Mother, Evelyn Campbell, and his father, Buxton Campbell (who had adopted him in 1978), both predeceased Stephen. They were extremely proud of his hard work and dedication to the community. To his two daughters, Amber D. Campbell, and Brandy R. Owenby, Stephen was an amazing father who never failed to show up for them and always expressed his love. When Amber and Brandy became parents, Stephen reveled in the title of “Papaw.” His grandsons, Cadence Cagle and Hunter Owenby, will feel the loss of his loving presence and adoration for them.

His loss is greatly felt throughout his large family, especially all the cousins and their children who thought of him as a friend and father figure, always available for a chat. The world is a lonelier and quieter place without our dear father, grandfather, and friend. He regularly attended The Place Fellowship Church in Fairview and cared for it deeply. We will always hold him in our hearts and minds and will strive to carry on his legacy of caring and love.

Stephen’s memorial service and celebration of life will be held on January 11, 2025, at 3:30 PM at The Place Fellowship Church, 2 Laura Jackson Rd, Fairview NC.
