Tommy "Pappy" Swangim Obituary

Tommy “Pappy” Swangim, age eighty-six, died Thursday, April 8, 2021, at home in Pisgah Forest, North Carolina.

Tommy was born in Mills River to Nellie and Doll Swangim. He grew up surrounded by his four sisters and two brothers whom he dearly loved. At a young age, he learned to play guitar and played in several bands throughout the years including Band Masters. He joined the Air Force in 1958 and served our country until 1963. When he came out of service, he opened up his own cabinet shop in Mississippi and later moved back to Pisgah Forest and opened up Swangim’s Custom Cabinets. When he was not working, he trained his coon hounds “Treeing Walkers,” and stayed in the woods with friends and family young and old. After retirement he loved gardening, telling “tall tales” with friends and family, and making everyone laugh. He lived a full and happy life and will be missed by all.

In addition to his parents, Tommy’s sisters, Nannie Swangim, Opel Peebles and Frances Ashe, and brothers, Russel Swangim and Frank Allen Swangim, preceded him in death.

He is survived by Sharon Rose Swangim, to whom he was married twenty-one years; children Dena Frisbee of Brevard, Duane Swangim of Pisgah Forest, LaJean Ward (Darrell) of Pisgah Forest, and Travis Lee Swangim of Brevard, and step-daughters, Nicolia Briggs (Scottie) of Wilkesboro and Carolina Huskins (Joseph) of Marble; sister Jean Galloway (Gayden) of Brevard; twelve grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

A service will be held in remembrance at Sycamore Flats Recreational Area at noon on Sunday, April 18, 2021. Reverend Don L. Moffitt will officiate.
