Virginia Mathews Mitchell

Virginia Mathews Mitchell passed away on May 29, 2023.

She was born in Halifax County, Virginia on September 24, 1927 to Alice Morton and Edward Gilmer Mathews. She was the first of four sisters and was preceded in death by her sisters Dorothy Stickney and Miriam Ray. Her sister Marilyn Buist of Charleston survives her.

In her very early life she lived in Fort Myers, Florida where her father was a real estate developer and later lived in Ponte Vedra and Coral Gables, Florida. The family moved to Asheville and lived at 1 Howland Rd. She attended Plonk School in Asheville and St Mary's in Raleigh. In 1948 she married James Hunter Mitchell. They had 3 children. In 1960 they moved to Jamaica, West Indies where Jim opened his architectural office and their forth child was born. In 1975 Virginia returned to Asheville and lived until she moved to Black Mountain in 2002 to be near her children.

She leaves behind two daughters, Catharine Stanley of Asheville and Lynn Mitchell of Black Mountain, two sons, James Mitchell, Jr of Black Mountain and Carter Mitchell, Sr (Jodee) of Riceville, five grandchildren, Alyson Vitt (Jamie), Carter Mitchell, Jr, Alex Mitchell (Alexandra), Mac Stanley (Caroline) and Jake Stanley and two great grandchildren, Frances and Carter Vitt.

Funeral services will be held at St James Episcopal Church in Black Mountain at 2pm on Sunday, June 11, 2023.
