William “Rusty” Russell Crutchfield of Fletcher, age 64, died on January 8. Rusty was born January 28, 1959 in Orlando, FL. Rusty was preceded in death by his father, William Crutchfield. He is survived by his mother, Loveta Smith Lewis, and sister, Rebecca (Roger) O’Kelley of Asheville; a son, Brian (Jessie) Crutchfield of Kingsport, TN; a daughter, Annika Marie Crutchfield of Asheville; three grandchildren, Garrett, Harper, and Emery Crutchfield; nephews, Jim Cole, John Davenport, and Will Davenport; and great-nephew, Isaiah Davenport.
He attended grade school at Emmanuel Lutheran and Gibbons Hall Catholic School. He loved sports from a young age. Rusty started playing soccer in fourth grad at Gibbons Hall, played during high school at Christ School and continued club soccer after graduation from college. He graduated from Christ School in 1977 and was inducted into the Christ School Athletic Hall of Fame in 1998. Rusty graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill and was a true Tar Heel. He was honored as a nominee for the Morehead Scholarship and received tuition for four years. He was a CPA and controller at Gaia Herbs, Inc. in Brevard.
Rusty loved to hike in his lifetime home, the mountains of Western North Carolina. He could tell you all the best hiking trails because he had hiked them many times. He fell in love with golf in his later years and was a member of the Etowah Valley Country Club for 26 years. He was club champion in 2018.
Rusty was a member of First Baptist Church of Asheville. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 14 at 2:00 p.m. in the Sanctuary. The family will receive friends following the service. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Rusty’s memory may be made to First Baptist Church Academy for the Arts (5 Oak St., Asheville, NC).
