Willis Alexander Obituary

Willis Annan (Bo) Alexander III was born March 20, 1951, to Frances and Willis Annan Alexander II in Mount Vernon Il. He was raised in Normal Il.

Bo graduated from University High school where he excelled as a varsity swimmer. He then attended and graduated from Lincoln College where he played varsity baseball and was a member of the swim team. In 1971 he set a school record in the 1,650 Freestyle.

After college Bo began his chosen career as the Assistant Golf Course Superintendent at Crestwicke Country Club in Bloomington, Il. In 1973 he was accepted to Penn State’s prestigious Turfgrass Management Program. After graduation in 1975 he landed his first Head Superintendent job at Connestee Falls Golf Club in Brevard N.C.

After a series of Head Superintendent roles in North Carolina and Florida Bo was recruited in 1986 to be the first Golf Course Superintendent at Wade Hampton Golf Club in Cahiers, N.C. During his tenure there Wade Hampton became a nationally recognized golf course. Bo was known as one of the top Superintendents in the eastern United States, specializing in cool weather grass.

After he retired from golf Bo and his wife Rhonda founded Carolina Cashiers Connection, a niche transportation service, covering western North Carolina. Bo’s commitment to his clients was notable as the company grew.

When not working Bo was an avid golfer and in his prime was a low single digit handicap player. He was proud but not boastful of his hole in one at Augusta National Golf Club. He was also a noted historian of the American Civil War and an avid Penn State Nittany Lions football fan. He rarely missed a game.

Bo enjoyed spending time with his many friends. Who will remember his kindness, loyalty, sense of humor and ever positive view of life. He loved living in Cashiers and never took the natural beauty of his surroundings there for granted.

Bo is survived by his beloved wife of 39 years Rhonda Gray Alexander. His brothers John P. Mills, San Francisco Ca.; Rich Alexander (Kathy) North Palm Beach, Fl.; and sisters Mary Lettre (Marcel) Fredericksburg, Va. and Kim Alexander (Vincent), Easton, Conn.

A Celebration of Life for Bo’s closest friends and family will be held in due course.
