Wilma Wright Waldin Thorpe of Old Fort, North Carolina, passed Saturday, May 14, 2022, at the age of ninety-four. She was born February 29, 1928, to the late Minnie Victoria Harrell and Raymond Virgil Waldin in Miami, Florida.
A Southern Baptist, Wilma was a member of Old Fort First Baptist Church and worked as a missionary in central Africa. She was a retired teacher, having taught in McDowell County schools after earning her teaching degree from Warren Wilson College, and she enjoyed gardening.
In addition to her parents, Wilma was preceded in death by her husband, Bennett Terry Thorpe.
She is survived by her children, Penelope Thorpe Hemphill (Ray Hemphill), Rilla Thorpe Wisor (Clifford Wisor), Daniel Terry Thorpe (Bobbie Thorpe) and Lucinda Thorpe; seven grandchildren; eighteen great-grandchildren; and a niece, Diana Rincon (Jack Rincon).
A memorial service will be held the afternoon of Saturday, May 28, 2022, at Old Fort First Baptist Church. Visitation will begin at two o’clock with the service to follow at three o’clock. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the International Foreign Mission Board – Lottie Moon Campaign.
