Welcome to the memorial page for

Matthew Garrison Barry

February 4, 2017

Matthew Garrison Barry, age 23, died unexpectedly on Saturday, February 4, 2017 in Bethesda, Maryland.  Matthew was born on June 17, 1993 in Bristol, Tennessee to Maggie Barry and Charley Barry.  Growing up in Bristol along with his twin brother, three older siblings, and many friends, Matthew was home schooled and had a very physically active childhood filled with activities like swimming, trampolining, and family camping trips.  In 2004, Matthew and his family moved to Waynesville and then to Asheville, North Carolina, where he attended Evergreen Charter School, made many close, lifelong friends, and became enamored of snowboarding.  In May 2006, Matthew led the services for Congregation Beth HaTephila in Asheville to mark the occasion of his becoming a bar mitzvah.  He graduated from Asheville High School in 2012.

Matthew was bright, well-read and loved to discuss politics and history.  He had begun to pursue a college degree in history or English.  He was caring, kind, and well-loved by many.   He is survived by his parents, Maggie and Charley; his sisters, Amelia and Allegra; his brother, Ezra; his twin brother, Freddie; five cousins; and he was preceded in death by his beloved grandparents, Phyllis and Joe Sachs and Jane and Steve Barry.

All loved ones and friends of Matthew and his family are invited to attend graveside services at Lou Pollock Memorial Park, Louisiana Avenue and Patton Avenue in Asheville, at 3:00 on Monday, February 20.  Everyone is also invited to attend a celebration of Matthew’s life from 2:00 to 6:00 on Saturday, February 25, at Asheville Friends’ Meeting House, 227 Edgewood Road, Asheville, 28804.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that gifts be made in Matthew’s name to Southern Poverty Law Center or to Matthew’s link below:
